Empreza
The Empreza was a specialized composite three-masted barque built in 1865 by Hardwick of Glasgow for Singlehurst and Co. She was specifically designed for the unique purpose of transporting assembled locomotives from Scotland to the American States, reportedly carrying some of America's first locomotives.
Construction and Design
Built with distinctive features to accommodate her specialized cargo role, Empreza featured an almost flat bottom and an extra large hatchway. While these design characteristics caused her to make considerable leeway while sailing, she was reportedly very fast. The vessel was registered in Liverpool with Official Number 29939.
Service History
The vessel was commanded by Captain W. Lee, who was the father of Captain Walter Lee. Documentation shows her presence in South Australia, where she was photographed at Jenkin's slip, Birkenhead, Port Adelaide by R.D. Edwards.
