Oceania

The Oceania was a passenger liner built by Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico in Trieste, launched on July 30, 1950. She was specifically constructed to carry post-war immigrants to Australia, operating initially on the Genoa to Sydney route.

Construction and Design

The vessel was built at C R dell'Adriatico's Trieste yard with the yard number 1759. She was one of three sister ships, alongside Australia (later renamed Donizetti) and Neptunia (later renamed Rossini).

Early Service (1950-1963)

Upon entering service, Oceania operated primarily on the immigrant route between Genoa and Sydney, Australia. In 1959, she underwent modifications that increased her gross registered tonnage from 12,839 to 13,139. At this time, her passenger configuration was also altered from the original three-class arrangement to a two-class system accommodating 136 first-class and 536 tourist-class passengers.

Service as Verdi (1963-1976)

On May 4, 1963, ownership of the vessel was transferred to 'Italia' SAN. In July of the same year, she was renamed Verdi and her gross tonnage was further increased to 13,226. Following these changes, she was deployed on a new route serving Genoa, Central America, and Valparaiso. The vessel's active service concluded when she was laid up at Genoa on July 27, 1976.
