Port Adelaide Operations
A significant photograph documents the Nemesis at Corporation Wharf, Port Adelaide, offering valuable insight into early Australian maritime operations. The vessel was captured unloading timber for Walter & Morris' timber yard using her own mast derricks, predating the installation of dockside cranes. The photograph provides a detailed glimpse of Port Adelaide's maritime infrastructure and surrounding businesses.
The historical scene captures several notable landmarks including the second Jervois Bridge and the Club House Hotel, where discussions led to the founding of the Port Adelaide Sailing Club. The image also shows Walter & Morris storage sheds, Knapmann's Brewery (which advertised Baden Powell big tonic ale and ginger beer), and their malt vinegar works. The Corporation Wharf, visible in the photograph, was located on the South Eastern side of the Jervois Bridge, where the Minories development now stands. A low-lying swampy area can be seen behind a smaller vessel berthed in front of the Nemesis.
Historical Documentation
The photograph is preserved in the South Australian Maritime Museum Collection (No. 2000) and is also cataloged as SWI Photo no. 95.
