The SS Lurline was an American passenger liner built by Bethlehem Ship Company in Quincy, Massachusetts. Originally designed for service between the United States mainland and Hawaiian Islands, the vessel would serve both as a civilian passenger ship and a wartime troopship.

Construction and Design

The Lurline was constructed at the Bethlehem Ship Company yards in Quincy, Massachusetts. She measured 192.6 feet (58.7 meters) in length with a beam of 24 feet 2 inches (7.37 meters). The vessel was designed to maintain a service speed of 20.5 knots.

Wartime Service

From 1942 to 1946, the Lurline was requisitioned for military service during World War II, serving as a troopship and carrying military personnel wherever required.

Post-War Service

Following the war, the vessel underwent a refit from 1946 to 1948 to restore her to passenger service. Under Matson Line ownership, she provided regular passenger service with accommodations for 800 passengers - 550 in first class and 250 in second class.

Later Years

The vessel was eventually sold to Chandris Lines and renamed Ellenis, though the date of this transaction is not recorded.
