Britanis
The Britanis was a passenger vessel built by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation in Quincy, Massachusetts. Launched on October 10, 1931, with fit-out completed in April 1932, she initially served under the Matson Line flag through several incarnations before beginning a successful second career with Chandris Lines.
Early History and Construction
Built as one of Matson Line's prestigious vessels, she operated as Monterey (1), Matsonia (3), and Lurline (3) during her first four decades of service. The vessel's robust construction and fine maritime engineering would enable an exceptionally long service life.
Chandris Line Service
In 1970, at 38 years old, she was purchased by Chandris Lines to replace the Queen Frederica. During refit, her foremast was replaced with twin king-post style derricks and she received elliptical funnels, though her 1950s Hawaiian interior décor was retained. The vessel commenced her maiden voyage as Britanis on February 21, 1971, sailing from Southampton via Cape Town to Auckland, returning to Europe through the Panama Canal.
From 1974, Britanis primarily operated Mediterranean cruises and voyages to North Sea, Russian, and Scandinavian ports. Along with her sister ship Ellinis, she demonstrated remarkable longevity in passenger service.
